Core issue

In a 4500 switch with Supervisor 5 (Sup V-10GE), when active and redundant supervisor engines are installed in the same chassis, these four uplink ports are available:

  • Gig1/1
  • Gig2/1
  • Gig 1/2
  • Gig2/2

In other words, two GigabitEthernet ports of the active supervisor, 1/1 and 1/2, are available as well as two of the standby supervisor, 2/1 and 2/2.

Resolution

These are the reasons when two Supervisor Engine V-10GEs are present in a Catalyst 4510R or Catalyst 4507R switch:

  • For 10-Gigabit Ethernet Uplink Ports, one X2 uplink is active on both the primary (active) and secondary (standby) supervisor engines by default, or two uplinks are active in a nonredundant configuration.
  • For Gigabit Ethernet SFP Uplink Ports, two SFP uplinks are active on both the primary (active) and secondary (standby) supervisor engines by default, or four uplinks are active in a nonredundant configuration.

Refer to the Supervisor Engine V-10GE section of document Installation and Configuration Note for the Catalyst 4500 Series Supervisor Engine V-10GE for more information.
