Index Gel on Transceivers

Anyone using index matching gel on transceivers (SFP or GBIC)? We tried using it on two 1310 GBICs last night and both failed to work after. I'm not finding any documentation one way or another on Google, Cisco, or in the Community.

In the end the fiber optic engineer and I spent an hour cleaning it off and replaced the GBIC.

I have never heard or seen anyone using index matching gel with a connector inserted into a transceiver; even in an amplified network.

The transceivers are designed to work with Physical Contact (PC) connectors or Ultra Physical Contact (UPC) connectors; or as specified by the vendor.

SC-style connector for GBIC, XENPAK & X2 transceivers

LC-style connector for SFP, SFP+ & XFP transceivers

Hope this helps!
