PMD errors on ATM module

I check the log on catalyst 5500 and get an errors about atm oc3 module as following:

Number of received Cells dropped due to Unknown VC: 9640912

PMD Error Counts:

for PHY_A

Section BIP-8 errors (B1): 8271825

I would like to know it indicates that optical wire is bad ?

It definitely sounds physical layer to me. I'm not going to tell you to run new fiber though.

have you tried characterising the fibre (OTDR) - probably best done before jumping to conclusions.

PS I'm not familiar with the product set but if your carrying multiple signals over single fibre and your only seeing errors on single channel - highly unlikely its the fibre
