Hi,

The following messages are logged in the irregular on Catalyst 4500E Supervisor Engine 7-E.

The 10GBASE-LX interface shouldn't require an attenuator; as the optical transmit level (max - 0.5dBm) does not exceed the maximum receiver input specification (0.5dBm.  It is possible these two SFPs is not tuned correctly.

Your posted output shows the 2/6 to 3/6 links with a higher receive power level than the transmit level (optical amplification - NOT).  Can you try swapping out these SFPs and see if the errors continue?  Otherwise you can add 5 to 10dB of attenuation to remove the alarm.

Hi Tom,

Can you please tell how to change the value of the threshold?

Thanks in Advance.

The power thresholds are not configurable as they are hard-coded into the firmware associated with the SFPs.

If you are seeing high power violations you should add inline attenuation.

Thank you Marvin

Hello Marivin.

I am configured new WS-C4500X-32 switches for distribution layer and server aggreation WS-C3650-48TQ-E with these model.

I am geetting below error message. I read your document but i ham getting here low alaram, i have observed because of this i am loosing connectiy with my neibhor device and ehter channel is flapping.

Kindly help me to fix this....

*Jan 28 23:54:04.417: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Te1/29: Rx power low alarm; Operating value: -16.4 dBm, Threshold value: -13.9 dBm.
*Jan 28 23:54:07.317: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Te1/31: Rx power low warning; Operating value: -10.5 dBm, Threshold value:  -9.9 dBm.
*Jan 28 23:54:07.417: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Te1/32: Rx power low warning; Operating value: -11.4 dBm, Threshold value:  -9.9 dBm.

That is most likely due to:

1. Loose patch cable

2. Dirty connection at patch point

3. Bad or damaged fiber in the path.

After verifying the transmit end power level ("show interface <number> transceiver detail"), reseat and clean each patch cable along the path. Then check the receive end power levels once again. If it's still bad, try moving to a different fiber pair if one is available. If not, then have your cabling vendor measure and correct the optical attenuation by either reterminating or replacing the strands.

Hello Marvin

Thanks for guidence.

I found vendor supplied cable was 62.5/125 diametter & its for Single mode. My SFP's are multimode

after replacing the cables from 50/125 diametter it's started to working without any error.

Thanks!

Ashiwn.
