Dark Fiber > 100Km

We are currently getting dark fiber circuit ran. And the distance changed from 93KM to >100Km. Exact distance has not yet been provided as the splicing is not complete. I purchased the CWDM-SFP-1550 Optic which can go 100Km. If my loss is too great at 100+KM for this optic. Is there some amplifyer i can buy? And would it go on the near or far end?

You'd really be pushing the limits of the technology to try to drive the signal >100 km. Not only do you have the straight out power loss due to the distance, you also have other factors such as dispersion that makes recovering the signal reliably more difficult.

If simple amplification was all it took, it would be an easy fix. Amplification doesn't fix a phase-shifted or noisy signal though. Unfortunately there's no way to tell exactly until you actually plug it in and validate the link's transmission characteristics.

Generally folks are better getting an Ethernet service vs. dark fiber. In such a service, the carrier is usually multiplexing and carrying the signal through multiple active nodes that actually perform an optical-electrical-optical regeneration.

Check first with the equipment you have, worry later.

Problem solved. Sometimes Cisco doesn't have all the answeres...

I can even go 160Km with CWDM optics

Glad you found a potential solution. Let us know how that works out for you.

Do you have these  in production and working? Because Cisco devices may not accept third party SFPs.

No the Dark fiber is not yet terminiated. Within a Month i hope. It is speced at 99.2Km. I will update when it does. And you are correct by default it does not....

But this command will let the switches accept the optic...

Update:

The fiber was terminated at 96Km.

I ordered 4 of these...http://www.championone.net/products/transceivers/sfp/single-fiber/

The 120Km version. And i was able to bring the site up on 2 Dark fiber links over 96Km

Good news. Thanks for the followup.
