What fields have to match between a server sfp and a switch sfp in order to determine they are both compatible? for example wave length , mmf...etc

problem is servers sfp models don't use the same LX SX ZX as cisco in their sfp naming

Even if they don't name them as such per se, you can always ask the server vendor. The nomenclatures being referred to in this thread are IEEE standards and not Cisco-specific.

So in summary in order to match a switch and a server sfp i only need to check if the are both mmf or smf and both having the same speed?

Yes.

Don't forget the patch cord.  If using 10 Gbps SR, at the very least, the patch cord would need to be OM3 or OM4.

For SM, it is OS2.
