Hi All,
Our SP customer is using Optical DWDM ONS 15454 in protection mode between various locations.
The below observation is between two locations.
The 2 path topology is as below:
Cisco 6513 Ten gig ---> ONS 15454 ----- PRIMARY FIBER RING --- ONS 15454 ---> Cisco 7609 TenGig
----- SECONDARY FIBER RING ---
OSPF is the RP between the 6513 & 7609.
Started a continous ICMP (1000 MTU size) ping on 6513 to 7609 Loopback address on OSPF.
They reset the active ONS 15454 Transponder card & the standby transponder immediately switched to Active.
But the ICMP ping took about 3-6 packet timeouts & then response continued
Hence the customer has the below query on the switchover time.
1. What are the reasons for the IP packet timeouts? The ONS 15454 protection switchover spec is 50ms & hence even the IP switching should be so as per the customer.
The Service-provider is yet to ascertain whether this switcover has any impact on the customer's traffic

Doesn't sound half bad for 10GB. What are the APS settings on the 6513 and 7600 ?
When we tested on an OC-3, we lost at least 1 ping during the swtich.
As long as the Layer 3 connections did not fail you should be in good shape

Hi Evan,
Thanks for ur reply.
Is APS applicable to 10 Gig interfaces on 6513 or 7609? Our understanding is that APS is applicable only to SONET (POS) interfaces. Pls correct us if we are wrong. Also I could not get any info on APS configuration on 6513 0r 7609 for a 10gig interface. Also to add the 10gig interfaces from 6513 / 7609 are connected to Transponder module on the ONS15454.
Regards
Chida

Aps only applies if your running sonet. are your 10gig interfaces routed and using HSRP? I still don't think you have a problem.
