Cisco ATA 186/188 supports speeds up to 14.4 kbps.

Any experience for third party ATA that is working fine with 33.6 kbps modem/fax?

What you are looking for is SuperG3 fax compatibility. A very simple (but expensive) way to do this is to use an IOS router (12.4T software) with an FXS card configured as an MGCP or H323 gateway. Sadly this is also a pain in the rear to configure in large numbers. If you centralise your fax lines or have a spare slot on the router, this is the best option.
If you are on Call Manager 5, you might want to try the mediatrix product (www.mediatrix.com) which is a SIP compatible SuperG3 TA. It also does H323 so may work ok with CM4. However, I have not used this device, and can't speak for its compatibility with other gateways.
A final, rather pathetic, way to do this is to nail up the ATA to G.711 only and let the SG3 machine try to fight its way through.
We hope and pray for the day that the ATA gets the SG3 upgrade!

What about the VG224? Will it support SuperG3?

Yes, we use an IOS MGCP VG224 Gateway and it works well with our Brother 4100e SG3 fax machine. I used the following URL for configuration.
