MTP inter works between signaling mismatches. Unlike a transcoder it cannot modify the audio/video media, only signaling. On IOS an MTP can be done in software by the router CPU (typical) or in hardware using DSPs (expensive). In most cases the correct choice is software and the DSPs are reserved for TDM termination, conferencing, and transcoding if needed.
dspfarm is how you define the characteristics/capacity of an MTP, conference bridge, or transcoder. The dspfarm is then associated to a ccm group to get it registered to CUCM.

You can not use CUCM MTP for Voice Termination or TDM to IP conversion you must have the PVDM/DSP hardware for that. You will need a router hosting DSP resources for that.
You can use software MTP without any DSP resources but for interopreabiliies etc. but not for voice termination.

Hello Jonathan, some questions, for exemple i can use CUCM as MTP server? i have 1 ISDN PRI with Cisco IOS 2801, but dont have any DSP modules, i can use MTP server to convert TDM to IP direct on CUCM? or i need a router to do it, for example for hardware MTP i can use one cisco 2911 with DSP3 Modules? and i can use a software without DSP modules one same 2911?
Thanks you helping me a lot.

+5 to Terry and Jonathan, you can check the Media resources FAQ on Docwiki for some nice info on these type of questions related to media resources
