Hi

I have a customer that would like to be able to delete old voice mails from users' mailboxes. Is there an Unity specific way of doing this or can we use the clean mailbox Exchange utility? It is a voicemail only installation.

Thanks.

Unity doesn't tread into the land of automatically deleting messages out of a shared store at this point. We've discussed it being an optional item that we can turn on and the like but the danger introduced always outweighs the benefits.

There are, however, nifty tools in Exchange you can use to get this functionality, the best of which is mailbox manager. In Exchange 5.5 this is an add on introduced into SP3, in Exchange 2000 it's built into the main product. This guy lets you decide what messages to delete based on a robust set of rules/conditions. It can also be used to send out reports to multiple folks indicating who is using what kind of message store space or which messages will be deleted (i.e. giving the admin the chance to approve) or send out warnings to owners of messages that will be automatically removed etc... lots of functionality in here and you can easily set it up to delete voice mail messages based on age (use the message class IPM.Note.Voice.Unity as your filter).

Here's a post on the forum about it:

Jeff, is this still the case, or do we have any nifty new utilities or features in 3.x / 4.x that will facilitate message deletion based on age?

If there is not a new unity tool to accomplish this, could we use mailbox manager and exclude all message classes except the voice message class??

Does anyone know the list of message classes that are present in a standard Exchange environment?

Does anyone know the message class for a voice message?

Thanks

Steve

Yes, we have a fabulous tool available to handle this (it's _so_ much better than Microsoft's mailbox manager). The Message Store Manager tool will do what you want it to here - Check out it's home page (compelte with help file and training videos) here:

Will the message store manager search folders other than the inbox?

It can deal with messages in the Inbox, Sent Items and Deleted Items folder as well as a custom folder it optionally creates for you for storing deleted messages temporarily.

It cannot search custom folders you create, however - it's limited to the 3 or 4 it knows about.
