DMM 5.4 Hardware

DMM 5.3 is now going EoL so any installs/upgrades going forward should really be DMM 5.4?

Does anyone know what hardware version 5.4 should be installed on?

NB The recommended hardware DMM-SVR-C210-K9 is also going EoL

Hi Mark,

I am only aware of DMS 5.4 being released as a software update only at the moment. Any DMM hardware running 5.3 will be able to be upgraded to 5.4.

Be aware though that DMS 5.4 does not support Show and Share, so any installation including Show and Share need to keep the DMM on 5.3.

Regarding future plans with DMM Hardware, as you mentioned, an End of Life for the DMM-SVR-C210-K9 has just been released:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/video/ps9339/ps6681/eol__C51-712645.html

As you can read there, there is not an hardware replacement option available now:

"There is no replacement available for the Cisco Digital Media Manager UCS C210 Server at this time."

This End of Life has just been released though. As you can see, this is going into End of Sales in April 2013 only, so

DMM-SVR-C210-K9 with DMS 5.3 is still orderable right now.

I would recommend you to contact your Cisco account team if you need information moving forward after that.

Regards,

Marco

Hi Marco,

I was aware that Cisco DMS 5.4 is supported on the hardware platform: DMM-SVR-C210-K9

The reason for the post was to try and establish what Hardware might be used to provide a solution

other than installing on hardware that will be going EoL.

I would prefer to recommend something that would be future proof in terms of Hardware rather than going back to the customer with an EoL server.

I have contacted my account team and currently they have as much information as you have provided.

regards

Mark

Hi Mark,

Understood, I can only recommend you to wait some more time and continue pursuing this through your Cisco Account Team, they should be able to get directions from product marketing regarding your best option moving forward.

Marco

Hi Mark,

As a follow up on this thread, Cisco has officially announced this week the availability of a Virtual Digital Media Manager option.

Documentation about this new option has been published at the following link:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/video/digital_media_systems/5_x/5_4/dmm/vm/dmm54x_vm.html

I hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Marco

Hi Marco,

we had already seen that via our Cisco Account Team. We are currently waiting on the hardware upgrade/migration guide to go from MCS/UCS appliances to VMware.

If you have any information on this process please forward it on.

thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,

OK perfect, I just wanted to make sure you were aware.

I haven't seen any migration guide available on Cisco.com yet. But basically you will need to:

- have the MCS/UCS DMM on 5.4 version

- deploy the Virtual DMM following the instructions at the link I mentioned. Obtain a new license for the Virtual DMM, this is also documented at that link.

- take a full backup from the MCS/UCS DMM and restore it on the Virtual DMM

Regards,

Marco

Hi,

Update to hardware requirements as below:

This announcement is a follow-up to the external EOS/EOL announcement of the DMM UCS C210 appliance server which was posted on October 5th (link here). New DMS customer opportunities should now be presented with the DMM VM option as the primary method of deployment (also includes high-availability/failover).

Hi Mark

Could you help me with this please.

What server I need to buy? if my client right now have a MCS7835H2-DMM51K9 with version of 5.2.2.1 with no show and share ando no Cast and they want to go to 5.4.

This question knowing that they have a SAS contract.

Thanks.

Hi,

Actually me and Mark have already discussed this specific migration issue in the following thread:

https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2190258?tstart=0

He had an MCS-7835-H1 but the situation is exactly the same with your MCS7835H2-DMM51.

Bottom line there is no official migration option, you should work with your Cisco Account Team for assistance.

Regards,

Marco

Hi,

as Marco has pointed out we have this on another thread. The situation for some servers is as of this moment is as follows.

The 7835-H1 and H2 servers do not support any release beyond 5.2.2. Previously, this was resolved by using a migration tool (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/video/digital_media_systems/hw/platform/migration/dmm-mcs-ucs.html) which would allow you to migrate off the old server hardware onto a newer platform. However, those new servers are no longer orderable.

The suggestion as of right now, is to build a C220 with VMWare installed to use the 5.4 version. To do this we will be starting from scratch, and rebuilding the DMM with new settings and mirrored old configurations. Unfortunately there isn’t a migration option right now that will allow a customer running on an old server platform to migrate to a VM while retaining all configurations and content during the process. So this is a manual process.

we worked with our UK Cisco account team to establish this.

regards

Mark

Thank You Guys

I just taulked with my account team and the simply send me a paper of Questions and Aanswers, and reading this one of the question is:

Q. Since the UCS-C210 hardware has been EOS/EOL, are there any Cisco servers that

are certified and tested with the 5.4 VM?

A. We have tested the DMM 5.4 VM software on UCS-C240 (M3) servers (2 RU) and found the

results to have met or exceeded the operations of a host with the specs as listed in Table 1

above. Therefore the UCS-C240 (M3) is a viable candidate server system to host the DMM

virtual machine.

So I am really not sure of what server choose for my client, this thing is apparently not clear yet. So please guys your answer is very important for me. You think so that UCS-C240 (M3) or you recommend a C220?
