migrating from ICS7750 to new MCS servers

I have a customer that is migrating from their old CCM 3.x setup running on an ICS 7750 to a new CCM 4.1.3 cluster running on an MCS server. They also have Unity VM only installed but I am not sure what version it is but it was installed the same time as the ICS about two years ago. The unity is so old that they can not get the dongles for it anymore which is one of the reasons for the upgrade. I need to know what documents and utilites are out there for this. How do we go about moving all of the configuration from thier old CCM setup to the new servers. this will not be an upgrade but basicly a replacement with new servers and new software. I know that someone must have done this before us so I am looking for some help on this. What utilites do I use and what should be some things to watch out for with both the CCM and the Unity switch over.

Hello:

CCM Upgrade.

That one is going to be a pain. You will in have a few issues sense during the server hardware change out you also want to jump to CCM 4.1X. So..You would use the backup tool to back up the pub running on your SPE. Then build a server recover on the new MCS hardware to load the backup onto. This should get the old system running on the new hardware. That way you can then upgrade the CCM 3.X version to 4.1.3.

Unity:

You should be able to get the Unity Lic upgrades you need without dongle. If you have a dongle that would mean you are on something like 2.4.6 or 3.1. As of 4.XX you no longer need the usb key to support Unity. In the event that you do not want to go that route. You can still use DIRT to back up the system and restore the box on the new version. With it being a non UVM install on the ICS you should just have to get a good full DIRT back.

Good Luck...

Here is the inforamation I have been able to get from the current system.CCM: 3.2(2c) cisco OS: 2000.2.3spc. Unity: 3.1(5) windows 2000 SP2 exchange 2000 sp2.

So would you suggest using BARS on the current PUB and then installing that version of the cisco OS with the same name and IP and then install that version of CCM and do the restore on the new hardware. Then do the upgrades to the lattest cisco OS and CCM. If that is the case do you know where I can find the old software? I am sure the customer does not have it and I do not think you can download it from CCO? Any help would be appreciated. Also if anyone has any other sugestions I would like to hear them.

This is the same as any upgrade when migrating to new hardware. I just sketched out some steps for a Customer recently -

Refer constantly to the Compatibility Matrix –

It is helpful to save this web page and then open with MS Excel to view (beware of hidden columns).

Upgrading CallManager from 3.2(2)c to 4.1(2)

Upgrade to 3.3(4)

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/sw/voicesw/ps556/prod_installation_guide09186a0080204011.html#wp305584

- You will need 3.3 CDs

- Upgrade OS to a minimum of 2000.2.6sr5. I would probably just run the 2000.2.7 upgrade. I would not add any patches onto this because you’ll be re-imaging the server later for the upgrade

- Upgrade Backup and Restore to 3.5.53 from:

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/cmva-3des

- Backup to off-box location

- Install & run Upgrade Assistant 3.3(4)from:

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/callmgr-33

There is a readme file available for this utility at the same location

- On the new server follow installation instructions to install 3.3(4) then restore the backup you made

Upgrade to 4.1(2)

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/sw/voicesw/ps556/products_installation_guide_book09186a00802c9a65.html

- You will need 4.1(2) CDs

- Upgrade the OS to the latest version (currently 2000.2.7 with sr5)

- Upgrade BARS to the latest compatible version – currently 4.0.7:

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/cmva-3des

- run backup

- Install and run Upgrade Assistant 4.1(2):

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/callmgr-41

view readme file for information on install

- Follow 4.1(2) upgrade instructions to upgrade the server

- If you wish upgrade to 4.1(3) via CCO download -

Migrating Unity to new Hardware

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/hw/voiceapp/ps967/prod_system_requirements_hardware09186a008041643c.html

Probably the easiest way to migrate is if you are running backup software like Veritas Backup Exec or another SQL and Exchange-aware backup utility. Reference the backup utility documentation to see if restoral to a different server name is supported (if applicable). Make sure all appropriate features are enabled on the backup software (Windows 2000, SQL, Exchange).

1) Backup the original Unity system

2) Install Windows 2000 on the new Unity server

3) Install backup client on new Unity server

4) Restore system from backup

Without backup software you can use the Unity Disaster Recovery Tool (DiRT). Instructions are here:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/products_upgrade_guides_chapter09186a0080205a85.html#wp1040765

There are also video-on-demand training videos and help files for DiRT here:

http://www.ciscounitytools.com/App_DisasterRecoveryTools.htm

Review the DiRT Backup and DiRT Restore VoDs before using. The VoDs not only show how to use the utilities but also what common issues are and how to avoid or resolve those issues.

For this migration you will:

1) Install and run DiRT Backup on SPE.

2) Install Unity on new server – OS, SQL, Exchange, Unity, etc. to build new server to the same release that was backed up with DiRT. Server name and IP address don't matter, just Unity version

3) Create test subscriber and leave a message. Make sure MWI works, login/logout, message retrieval etc. all works

4) Run dbWalker utility on new server to check database integrity

5) Restore via DiRT Restore using command line -

C:\CommServer\Utilities\DisasterRecoveryRestore\UnityDisasterRecoveryRESTORE.exe /DirtyRestore

View the VoD on DiRT Restore for details on why you run the utility this way

6) Run dbWalker

Following the server change you can upgrade (if licensed to do so) to the latest version of Unity – 4.0(5) is the latest right now.

Ok Thanks alot for your response. So are you saying that I have to upgrade to 3.3 first and then to 4.1.2? I found this document as well http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/sw/voicesw/ps556/products_installation_guide_chapter09186a00801ed10a.html

Thanks for all of your help. Also if I do have to upgrade to 3.3 first how do I get that media?

Yes. Check the compatibility matrix to see what release can be upgraded to what release -

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/voice/c_callmg/ccmcomp.htm

the first couple rows show what is supported.

If you have a SASU contract on the software you can upgrade via the product upgrade tool (PUT) -

http://www.cisco.com/upgrade

Otherwise you need to order the respective upgrade to receive the CD/DVDs. If you already purchased the 4.1 upgrade contact your account team for the 3.3 CDs.

Ok I just wanted to pass on this list of items we have ordered to make sure we have what we need. I am pretty sure we do it was looked over by a few people in cisco but sometimes things get overlooked.

I think we have the call manager upgrade figured out on what we need to do but with the unity upgrade if we use DIRT do we have to restore DIRT to the same version of the os/unity or can we back up the older version and restore to Unity 4.x?

Also with the Unity upgrade what is the process that I have to go through with the license upgrade. I am pretty sure they have the dongle now but will move to the new flex licensing with the upgrade.
