Newbie VoIP questions with a UK slant

Hi,

Sorry for the newbie-ness of all of this, but here goes:

We're shortly moving to new offices, and I'm planning to use IP Phones instead of a legacy PBX. Here's what I've got in mind; stop me when I start talking rubbish:

- I've got a 2621XM lying around; I plan to use CallManager Express and Unity Express (on the AIM) for call and voicemail handling. (Is CME a VoIP "gatekeeper"?)

- I also want the 2621XM to connect to the PSTN (making it a "gateway"?), so that IP phone users can make and receive calls to/from the wider world. For this, I guess I'll need a PRI line, a voice NM, some kind of VIC or VWIC to connect to the PRI, and an FXS card for faxes, etc.

I'm in the UK; what do I ask BT for? Just a PRI? Do PRIs come in different flavours? I need three lines on tel number xxx, and one each on yyy and zzz. Is this feasible?

What NM and VIC/VWIC hardware will I be needing?

thanks for any help,

alec

I think you are a bit optimistic expecting one 2600 to do all that for a business :)

BT will supply a PRI as an ISDN30. Unfortunately, BT have a 10 DDI number minimum that they will allocate on an ISDN30 and a minimum channel configuration of 8, so you may want to look at FXO and standard PSTN pots lines into your 2600.

best of luck !

Alec,

That is the correct VWIC. Just be aware if you want to place the VWIC in an XM WIC slot you will need the relevant AIM-VOICE module. Otherwise you will need a HDV module (look at the NM-HDV-1E1 bundles which include all the parts).

Alternatively consider using the new NM-HDV2-1T1/E1 (you won't need the VWIC in this case because it has an E1 on board, but you will need to add PVDMs).

Also pay close attention to the IOS version for support of the installed modules.

Hi Keith,

Thanks for the reply!

Do you know which VIC/VWIC would be required for an ISDN30e? VWIC-1MFT-E1?

thanks a lot,
