NIM-2BRI NT/TE

I've configured many NIM-2BRI cards in 4321 with success but in 4331 the same commands can't make the card work.

I've tried different other commands with no success.

If anyone knows something useful for this to work please share it with us.

The problem is that I have no audio in calls or audio with very bad noise.

Thanks for sharing that. You seem to be a bit unlucky in that all cards of yours are having this issue. The cards are affected by a TDM switch initialization failure issue.

From the output, "NGVMTDM_CTL=0x00000006" is what tells me the issue. This should be "0x00000001" instead.

This is documented in an internal defect so can't share the defect ID. Only 10% BRI cards are affected by this. You seem to be 100% affected since all your cards are having an issue.

Upgrade to 16.7.2 or 16.8.1 which have the fix for this.

Is there a difference b/w the XE code on the two routers ?

I've tried in 4331 the same version I had in 4321 which is the 16.5.2b

I've also tried in 4331 the version 16.6.3 which is the recommended one.

No results.

Can you add a "show run" from the affected router please ?

I have attached the "Show Run" with the NIM-BRi DSP Usage in a call.

Take an output for "show platform software subslot x/y module firmware" >> this would be 0/2 for you.

The output is the bellow.

Router#show platform software subslot 0/2 module firmware
DSPware Version 46.2.3, built on Dec 11 2017:13:16:18 from kctsai-DSPWARE_46_2_3
NGIO Version ngio@v166_throttle/5

 TDMSW registers (fpga ver = 0x10300, 2+0 analog ports)

 TDMSW64_ENBL_63_32=0x00000000,    TDMSW64_ENBL_31_00=0x00000000
 TDMSW64_RATE_63_48=0x55aaaa55,    TDMSW64_RATE_47_32=0x55555555
 TDMSW64_RATE_31_16=0x00000000,    TDMSW64_RATE_15_00=0x00000000
 TDMSW64_CTL=0x00000000,           NGVMTDM_CTL=0x00000006
 FPGA misc_ctrl       = 0x00
 FPGA tdm_pll_cntl    = 0x00
 FPGA tdm_pll_status  = 0x02

I have to inform you that I've tried 3 different NIM-2BRi NT/TE cards in 3 different 4331 Routers with multiple IOS with the same exact results.

Let's focus though in finding the problem as I believe is the same in all my tests.

Thank you in advance.

My friend you are absolutely right.

I upgraded to version 16.7.2 and I made a successful call.

Unfortunately with this version I had the message "%PLATFORM-4-ELEMENT_WARNING: R0/0: smand: RP/0: Used Memory value 89% exceeds warning level 88%" which is the bug CSCvf59313

I upgraded to version 16.8.1 and I also made a successful call.

In this version I had the message " %HMAN_CPU-3-PAGE_FAULT_HIGH: R0/0: hman: CPU Usage due to Memory Pressure (64) exceeds threshold (50) on BINOS_FRU_RP".

I believe I will leave the version 16.8.1

Cisco should mark this as a bug.

Thank you so much my friend!!

Both of those seem to be a cosmetic defect but open up a TAC case if you still have one on 16.8.1 code.

As for the BRI, this has to do with the firmware on the embedded DSP firmware against the XE code. There is an enhancement open for this but upgrading the XE code upgardes the DSP firmware as well so it takes care of the issue.

Good to hear that the issue has been resolved now.

My friend the IOS you suggested have many bugs.

They may be good in order for the BRI to work but they create other problems with the RAM or the CPU of the 4331 router.

Is there a way to have the card work with the suggested 16.6.4 Everest or the 16.3.6 Denali IOS.

Can we do something in the card?

You have two options -
1. Open up a TAC case and have them work on the memory and CPU issue on the newer code.
2. Or, open up a TAC case and request for a dsp firmware that fixes the defect only and does not require a code upgrade.

Thank you Nipun.

I will inform you with the process of this if any.
