Softphone to Gateway without CallManager?

Hi there,

I'm wondering if it's possible to place calls between a Cisco Softphone and a Cisco gateway (any model from 827 to 3600 with analog voice modules). So far the only answer I've seen implies the use of CallManager which unfortunately I don't have at home.

Let's say I have DSL service in NY with an 827-4V and a fixed IP address.

I travel to Cancun and get to the net via dial-up (local call) from my room. I want to call my home gateway from my IP Softphone and avoid long distance charges.

I'm fully aware there are other solutions for this. I know QoS is a big issue when doing VoIP over the Internet, but I want to use what I already have and mainly just because.

Is this possible?

TIA

Carlos

Hello Carlos,

Call Manager is mandatary to get Softphone to work. This is because Softphone talks TAPI, and gateway, say, 827-4V talks H323; and CM is the bridge between the two.

Maybe you could try other readily available desktop voice applications which could speak H323, such as Netmeeting?
