Hello,
I have an SX 80 codec (TC7.3), no VCS servers or TMS. The codec is currently registered to our CUCM (version 8.6.2). It can make & receive calls within our company (basically any # within our CUCM). However, it can only receive outside calls. It cannot initiate calls outside our CUCM.
It is setup as SIP. We don't have a gatekeeper. Is our CUCM version too old to handle external calls? Do we need a VCS Edge server for external calls?
Thanks,
Ealey

What kind of address do the external sites use to successfully connect to the SX80, and what address format(s) are you using when calling external systems?

I get the feeling we're treating the SX 80 as a traditional Cisco VoIP when dialing out of our company. When I mentioned external calls, I meant it in the traditional VoIP...not video teleconference calls.
We can call the SX 80 (ie dialing XXX-XXX-XXXX) from any phone inside or outside our company. However, when trying to dial any XXX-XXX-XXXX, it gives the error: unable to connect sip call.
Thanks.

If you are trying to make video calls to external sites, then the majority of address formats used are either URI, i.e. Alias@domain or IP address formats.
URI dialling is not supported by your version of CUCM, so you would need to upgrade to at least 9.x, preferably 10 for this to work.
The call log, or even better, the DNA tool within CUCM, might give you an indication as to why the calls fail, but chances are it is appending your SIP domain to the address, which is normal behaviour for SIP clients, and hence the call doesn't go anywhere since it is not, being an external address, a "known" address.
Re debugging external calls, see this well written piece by Amy Arnold aka @amyengineer - http://www.networkcomputing.com/unified-communications/troubleshooting-external-voip-calls-on-cisco-ucm/a/d-id/1234259?
Adding an Expressway-C and E will give you some added options and benefits, including secure firewall traversal and would be worth looking into. Suggest you reach out to your Cisco rep to see if this could be a viable option for your organisation.

Mate,
make an external call from your SX80 and send us the call trace of both your Gateway and Call Manager for that particular failed call.
