Upgrading CallManager, Unity & IPCC for the first time

We had our voip system installed back in December of 2004 and I'm just getting around to bringing all the servers (2 CallManagers, 1 Unity, 1 IPCC) up to date. This is the first time I've done this. Where can I find out what updates I need for the servers? Are there any tools that will tell me what updates are available (like a windows update for Cisco?). Microsoft has release loads of hotfixes since December, so I am sure there are plenty that need to be installed. But I know I can't just download them through Windows update.

I appreciate the help.

Thanks

John

John,

You can either stay at your current versions and update them with patches that are available on Cisco's website (Refer to link provided by Chris). or you can move from the current version and upgrade them to latest versions. Moving from one version to another major version requires downtime to upgrade all the servers. Microsoft updates can be used for updating the operating system in Unity server. Refer to this link for updates on operating system running on Unity server.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/products_maintenance_guide_chapter09186a0080443b78.html

If you are moving from a major version such as 3.x to 4.x for Callmanager, you will need to use PUT to get the CDs. Upgrades from 3.x to 4.x is not allowed using downloadeable exe's. If you have smartnet on those products, you can use that (SAU contract) to get free upgrade CD kit.

There are two types of updates you can do to Callmanager. OS updates (MS Service packs equivalent)

as well as Callmanager software updates.

If you have a CCM 3.3.4 (say) your OS should have been a minimum of 2000.2.6 (C:\util\mcsver.exe). To move from 3.3.4 to 4.1.3 version of callmanager, you need a minimum of 2000.2.7sr5 which is a downloadable exe (You can use the link provided by Chris in the post above).

For Unity upgrades, we have to look at what version you currently have, what kind of licenses you have (dongle or FLEX LM). Direct upgrade to 4.0 is supported in most latest Unity versions (3.x).

For IPCC upgrades 3.x to 3.5 you can use PUT tool to get the required part numbers.

PUT is available here.

John,

Also look for the Compatibility matrix. It's very important piece in the upgrade process. Following is the url for the compatibility matrix.

I would also suggest, befor doing an upgrade, shutdown the publisher and pull out drive 0 and boot only with the mirrored drive(s). Once booted insert blank drive for mirror process. This way you've your current version, in case your upgrade fails and you've to go back to current version.
