does anyone know if an avaya phone will pick up a voice vlan address from a cisco switch since it does not use cdp and if not how does one go about assigning different vlans to phone and attached pc?

The phone will not get the voice vlan from CDP.

The Avaya phones use a DHCP double dip. Initially they will DHCP in the native or access vlan. Option 176 can then specify a vlan. If so, the phone releases the DHCP scope and then will send a DHCP request in the new vlan (ie with 801.1q tag). If the switch is configured to allow this vlan, then the phone will get a new lease in the new vlan.

There is also a timer that, until it expires, subsequent DHCP requests will still occur on the "voice" vlan. After the timer expires, the DHCP requests are then sent on the native or access vlan and the whole process starts again.

The following is the required content for option 176. This would put the phone into VLAN 14.

"MCIPADD=192.168.14.5,MCPORT=1719,TFTPSRVR=192.168.14.99,L2QVLAN=14"

thanks
