HyperFlex migration from HX 4.0(2B) to HX 4.5(2b)

Hello,

We have an HyperFlex system with 5 nodes HXAF240C-M5SX, HX 4.0(2B), UCS Server FW 4.0(4k) and UCS FI 4.0(4h), Vmware ESXi 6.7.0 U3 (17098360) and VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.7.0.52000 (19299595).

We are planning to migrate to HX 4.5(2b), and I see that recommended version is 6.7U3 - Cisco HX Custom Image for 6.7 U3 P05 build 17700523 or later build, so because we are in the build 17098360, do we need to update the ESXi in order to have at least the build 17700523? Can we install the patches with the Vsphere Update Manager?

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/hyperconverged_systems/HyperFlex_HX_DataPlatformSoftware/release-guidelines-and-support-timeline/b-recommended-hx-data-platform-sw-releases/m-recommended-releases.html#Cisco_Reference.dita_28e56947-4936-4081-8e13...

Thanks in advance,

Omar De Souza.

The latest ESXi 6.7 U3 upgrade bundle posted is HX-ESXi-6.7U3-18828794-Cisco-Custom-6.7.3.17-upgrade-bundle.zip

You will want to use the HX customized upgrade bundles to get to the highest patch level possible, and then can apply the smaller security patches from vmware (if needed) after that, as long as the security patches do not push you past another "U" release level, in which case it probably won't be just a 'security' patch release.

See https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/hyperconverged_systems/HyperFlex_HX_DataPlatformSoftware/b_ESXi_HXDP_Compatibiltiy_Guidelines.html

I would use the the HX connect upgrade UI to apply your ESXi related updates.

VUM is not HX cluster health aware, and have seen it take down numerous clusters, after trying to restart additional hosts, when cluster healing/resync has not completed.

Hi Kirk,

Thank your for your answer.

When I try to test the upgrade eligibility in HX connect upgrade with the HX-ESXi-6.7U3-18828794-Cisco-Custom-6.7.3.17-upgrade-bundle.zip, there is an error message "Not Eligible", and in the details, "

Failure occurred during cluster_upgrade_precheck, Error was: Some(Upgrade validation error)", "CheckVcenterConfiguration: Checking vCenter configuration"

Do you have any idea? I also tried with the bundles 17499825 and 17700523, and I received the same error.

Omar De Souza.

What specific patch level is your Vcenter?

I have seen that validation error before when testing ESXi versions that would move the ESXi host higher than the vcenter patch level version.

Hi Kirk,

We have vCenter Appliance 6.7 Update 3q (6.7.0.52000) built 19299595

Thanks,

Omar De Souza.
