All,
On a Nexus 1Kv we uploaded a licence file which gave us the following output:
aus-clm-n1kv-01# sh license
N1KVFEAT20130415002218425.lic:
SERVER this_host ANY
VENDOR cisco
INCREMENT NEXUS1000V_LAN_SERVICES_PKG cisco 1.0 permanent 4 \
HOSTID=VDH=1364103930136564173 \
NOTICE="<LicFileID>20130415002218425</LicFileID><LicLineID>1</LicLineID>
\
<PAK>3711J73BF39</PAK>" SIGN=E0D36318252A
When I am trying to interpret what this exactly means what does that "permanent 4" mean?
Regards,
Nikhil Kulkarni.

Hi Nikhil,
This refers to the fact it is a license that will not expire and that it will support four Virtual Ethernet Module CPU sockets.
If you run the command show license usage NEXUS1000V_LAN_SERVICES_PKG you should see how these licenses are actually being used.

Thanks Steve,
Sorry for asking again but my N1kv knowledge is limited. What do you mean by "four Virtual Ethernet Module CPU sockets".?
Regards,
Nikhil Kulkarni.

Hi Nikhil,
Each ESX server is represented as a Virtual Ethernet Module (VEM) of the Cisco Nexus 1000V and can be considered as if it were an I/O module of a physical switch. If the ESX server has multiple CPU sockets, then it will require multiple licences to operate.
Take a look at the Overview in the Cisco Nexus 1000V License Configuration Guide as this explains the concept and provides some additional information about the licensing.
