OTV and PIM

I cam across a PIM configuration issue in an OTV VDC.

Could anybody explain a bit in detail why enabling pim sparse-mode is not allowed on a OTV Join interface?

It is because the join-interface is a multicast client, all you need to do is configure IGMP version 3.
