Partial-missing of configuration on nexus 7000 due to ethernet module failure

Hi,

We have a pair of nexus 7k running vpdc and we encountered that when an ethernet module failure occur in one of the n7k, the interface configuration disappear mysteriously, you cannot able to see the interface configuration of that module in "sh running-config" and even on the "sh startup-configuration".

Any ideas if this suppose to be the behaviour of this device ?

Which config are you referring to that dissapears? The FEX related interface config?

Yes correct, those Ethernet interface configuration pertaining to the failed module

So when a FEX goes down, the configuration is withdrawn from the running-config. This is normal Nexus behavior. (remember the FEX is a the equivalent to a linecard on the switch it is connected to.

The Nexus 5000's supports a feature known as Module Pre-Provision, but that has not been available on the N7Ks. (Not sure if it might be in 5.2).

Module Pre-Provision creates the interfaces of the provisioned hardware model and as a result keep the config of those interface in the running-config when that device is down or not connected.

So unless you move your FEX to N5Ks (which might not be a an option), there is not much you can do about it for now.

HTH

Thanks for your reply, does that mean that the FEX configuration will be withdrawn forever once the module failed, in other words, once the faulty module is replaced and restored, we have to re-configure the FEX configuration all over again?

Thanks

Regards

Aloysius

Nope, When you replace the FEX, the configuration will be available

No need to reconfigure. That config is stored somewhere, just no in the running config.

Oh okie, noted

Thanks
