Have you got STP loops in the network? We had a similar issue last year where an undetected loop in the network brought everything down. There was so much traffic the 3550's couldn't handle it and reported the error.
We 'worked' around the issue with the customer by reducing the number of VLAN's trunked everywhere. We also upgraded the IOS to 12.1(20)EA6, although I don't think the IOS upgrade was the fix.

The MALLOC errors are usually fixed by doing an IOS upgrade. Get the latest version in the switch and reboot.
