3550 Switch Ports Going Down

I am trying to help a friend so I have limited access. He says a few of the ports on his 3550 switch will just go down. Is there a feature built into these switches that cause ports to disable themselves and if so, what is the circumstances under which it will do so?

The ports may experience error disabling:

Other possibility is that your friend has been playing with port security...
