Re: 4506/4515 and vlan interfaces / routing

I just got a new 4506 with a 4515 sup IV module.

I powered it up, and entered the following:

en

conf t

vlan 41

int vlan41

ip address 10.41.254.254 255.255.0.0

no shut

^z

now, if I type

ping 10.41.254.254

I get no replies . . . what am I doing wrong?

When I session # into the router blade on a 4006 and create a vlan interface and give it an IP, I can ping it immediately . . . so I think I'm missing something here.

And when I try to make port channels, such as

int port-channel1.41

I get an error. It only allows me to make a port channel as a whole number, for example 41, but on the 4006 blade, I can make port-channels with 1.41, 1.100, 1.241, etc. etc.

I'm having a hard time finding documentation on the 4515 that explains how to make a pingable virtual lan interface, or that deals with port channels aside from the regular command reference info, but that doesn't help me much.

Any help would be appreciated!

Do you have any active members in VLAN 41? I guess not. Your layer 3 VLAN interface will be down/down with no members in the VLAN due to autostate(do a sh interface vlan 41 and check)

Unline a 4232-L3, you do not need port channels to configure inter VLAN routing. Refer to the following configuration guidelines

Well, I did read over the documentation there, but I found it sparse in terms of explaining really how ip addresses attached to vlan interfaces function. In any case, I figured I probably just needed to add ports to the vlans and connect the ports to something, so I threw in an LX/LH gbic, setup the trunk options on the port, then attached it to a 3524 switch, and it all started working. Now I have the routing setup, and the 4506 completely configured and ready to install as soon as the fiber is ready in the new building (hah).

I guess I should have tried that sooner, I just thought you could ping vlan interfaces without having any real hardware there to begin with, my mistake !
