Hi,
Could anyone explain to my what UDP port 179 is used for with BGP? I have been looking through cco and averywhere but could not find the answer.
I like to find out when someone would need to open a firewall to allow UDP/179 for BGP through?
Thanks,
Uwe

Hello Uwe,
no idea why UDP port 179 should be opened for BGP, it is not used by BGP. Try and configure an access list between two BGP neighbors, blocking UDP port 179 and allowing everything else, the BGP peer relationship is established just fine.

Georg

BGP definitely doesn't use UDP port 179. It only uses TCP port 179 when opening a passive connection.
Hope this helps,
