C9500 PTP

Hello,

I have a Cisco 9500-32C and from what I can gather it is capable of being used as a PTP boundary clock. However, I can not find any setting to enable or configure PTP in the CLI and I have looked in privilege exec and global configuration mode - but nothing is there. Do not all 9500's have PTP capability? Or does this only work after a certain software version? I am running version 17.03.01 and this switch also has DNA Advantage. From what I gather it should be there, but its just not!

Thanks in advance!!

DNA Advanced and Network Advanced is not the same thing. They have very different levels of features.

PTP is under Network Advanced.

Hi,

   Never used PTP on CAT9k, per your license and version I should be supported https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-9300-series-switches/nb-06-pte-cat-switches-faq-cte-en.pdf

 At the same time, what is the need for using PTP?

Best,

Cristian.

I also saw that it should be supported.. which is what stumped me in the beginning of all this.

PTP is being used throughout a DAS for high speed data. Other time protocols are used as well, but some specifically need PTP. If I could get away with something else that would certainly be nice..

@gemerson131

 It is supported from Cisco IOS XE Fuji 16.8.1a.  Is it your 9500 in stackwise virtual?

"PTP is not supported on Cisco StackWise Virtual configured devices."

@Flavio Miranda

That is a good question! I do not believe that is the case.. but they may have been used in stackwise virtual environment and have not unconfigured that. Good idea!

So lets say it is stackwise virtual and I need to use another switch... I also have a C9300-48U that could use PTP right? I think it was having the same issues though.. Not to change up the topic on you, but would the 9300's be the same issue?

Thanks!

Q.  What is the license level needed to enable PTP on the Catalyst 9000 switch platforms?
A.  Network Advantage is needed to enable PTP on the Catalyst 9000 switch platforms.

Q.  What platforms in the Cisco ® Catalyst ® 9000 portfolio support PTP?
A.  PTP is supported on the following platforms in the Catalyst 9000 switching portfolio:

●      Catalyst 9300 Series platforms

●      Catalyst 9400 Series platforms

●      Catalyst 9500 Series platforms

●      Catalyst 9600 Series platforms

@Flavio Miranda

I see! This all makes sense. However, from what I gather all 9300 switches with DNA Advantage and software version 16.8.1a or higher should be fine, right? But my 9300-48U with DNA Advantage running 16.12.4 has no option of PTP settings anywhere. This switch is 100% not running in stackwise virtual, and I cannot find any particular reason it would not be there considering all documentation states it should be. Is this a hidden setting? Does it just simply need an update? I am grasping...

Thanks for all your help so far.

Ah Yes! This is why.. too many licensing options for me to understand apparently.. Thanks again for your help!

Yeah, Cisco licensing now a days requires a certification to understand.
