What do i need to take note before changing the card other than saving the config?

Thanks

Hi,

when you only change the MSFC you should only save the config and the IOS. When you also change the SUP and you use CatOS you should save the vlan.dat also.

Regards

Peter

Currently there's only 1 MSFC, using CatOS and we are replacing it. The CatOS, start-config, vlan.dat are stored in the flash card right?

So wat i have to do, is to power off the whole 6500 switch, swap the module, insert the flash card into the new module. Power it on... Is that correct?

By the way, isn't the MSFC and SUP the same module?

Thanks...

vlan.dat file is in native IOS only. Couple questions

1)Are you running hybrid or native IOS

2)Are you just replacing the MSFC or entire Supervisor board? If you are just replacing MSFC only there is no need to back up the vlan.dat file

1) how to check whether hybrid or native? and what does hybrid / native means?

2) i suppose it's the entire sup board, i got the whole piece of module with me. Is the MSFC a card on the sup board?

1)If you are running hybrid, you will have CAT OS(set based commands on the Supervisor) and IOS on the MSFC. If you are running native IOS, both the Sup and the MSFC will be running integrated IOS

2)Yes. The MSFC is a daughter board on the Supervisor

Have checked, my catalyst is running hybrid. So what are the steps to be taken?

Thanks

With hybrid there is no concept of vlan database. So back up the config of the Supervisor as well along with MSFC since you will be replacing the entire Sup/MSFC board.

So once you remove the old board, install the new one. Upgrade/downgrade CAT OS/IOS to whatever you want and then put back the configs you backed up.

I will be using back the flash card. So by right all the configuration will be in the card right? Backup is just a precaution. Am i right?

If you are swapping the Sup/MSFC, the existing configs go with the Sup/MSFC and you will need to put back the config(either from a TFTP server or a flash card or manual copy/paste)
