Hi,
I have a Cisco 3640 which i just bought from ebay. The router has 12.3
IOS loaded on it.
I bought a WIC-2T from another person. Now the Wic-2T doesnt seem to be
getting detected by the Router. Show diag gives the following:
NM-2FE2W Port adapter, 2 ports (Could someone explain this and
the next line pls. Is the Module itself at fault?)
Port adapter is disabled
Port adapter insertion time unknown
EEPROM contents at hardware discovery:

What might be the problem? I tried removing and reinserting the card,
to no avail.
Is the card bad? Could I have the wrong IOS? Will it work with 12.2? I
have 12.3 now, currently. The wic-2t compatability listing does not
explicitly list 12.3, thats why Im asking.
Just want to make sure that it isnt something other than just the card
being a dud.
Show interface displays the fastethernet0/0 and 0/1 interfaces but not
the serials.
Thanks in advance.

Also show slot1 displays
%Device 'slot1:' is in REMOVED state
%Error show slot1: (No device available)
This is despite the fact that show interface diplays the ethernet ports on the module in this slot as being just fine.
Please help! :)
Thanks

Give a show version and paste the output here for more analysis.

Ah something great just happened :)
Was playing around with setup and grrr ...
used:
user name: roon
and password: roon
I got a message that password is too short, but I ignored it.
Now I cant seem to login through the console.
It prompts me for the login & password, I enter roon/roon and now it wont let me in .. grrr.
Lol, now what :) ? I tried holding down/pressing break repeatedly. Doesnt work.
Sorry for being so newbie like at this, I just am a newb, sorry.

Depending on what operating system you have and what software you use, the break keys might different. Here is a link which shows the different break sequences.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps133/products_tech_note09186a0080174a34.shtml
Mostly Ctrl+ Break should work in your case.
Here is also a link to password recovery on 3600.
Your IOS might not be compatible with your WIC. So I wanted the show version output to see what version/feature set of IOS you are using.

12.3.1 version of IOS does support both the NM and your WIC. Have you checked if you have inserted the wic properly ? Also try swapping it into the second slot on the NM. There could also be a possibility that the WIC is bad. Hopefully you did not insert the wic when the power was on. WICs are not hot swappable.

Hi,
Thanks for all the help!!
I installed the wic with power off, as per the instructions.
But tell me, should I be seing stuff like this?
show diag returns the following:
NM-2FE2W Port adapter, 2 ports Port adapter is disabled
Port adapter insertion time unknown
Show slot1 returns:
%Device 'slot1:' is in REMOVED state
%Error show slot1: (No device available)
This is despite the fact that show interface diplays the ethernet ports just fine.
bootup gives the following strange message:
*Mar 1 00:00:09.931: %FECPM-1-INITFAIL: NM slot 1: PCI dev 0 init
failed
*Mar 1 00:00:10.019: %FECPM-1-DISCOVER: NM slot 1: only 2 PCI dev
found
Could the module be bad? Is there any sure-shot way of finding out?
Thanks!

Decoding the last 2 syslog messages, indicate the following at the Cisco's website.
"Power down, reinsert the port module, and reboot. If this message recurs, copy the error message exactly as it appears on the console or in the system log, contact your Cisco technical support representative, and provide the representative with the gathered information".
Since this has already been done, there could be possibility that the wic is bad.
To decode a show diag output, can you paste a full output of show diag.
