Configuring Loopback Interface for MGMT/MON

I am in the process of configuring a loopback interface for mgmt/mon and have a few questions. Also suggestions on best practices would be appreciated.

When assigning the loopback ip address, is it possible to use an address from a segment on an interface? IE, if my fastethernet segment is 192.168.1.0/24, can an address in that range be used on the loopback? Is this a good or bad idea and why?

Is it better to assign a completely different ip network to the loopback interface?

Hello,

Usually, we use a host ip address completly different from other interfaces. Do not forget to include these host addresses in your routing protocol.

You can selected a subnet which will be used for monitoring and management from your address space and sub-divide this subnet - one host per device.

Example:

192.168.0.1 - Router 1 - loopback 0

192.168.0.2 - Router 2 - loopback 0 etc.

You will also source snmp traffic from R1 using loopback 0.

Hope this help,

Nadine.
