Hi,
We have a leased line(primary) 2651XM router and a ISDN(backup) 1751XM router. We have enabled HSRP on the ethernet port. We do not want to make the backup router dial automatically. Instead, generating a prompt to the sys admin so that he/she can manually initiate the dialup.
How can we configure on the routers to:
1. Notify the sys admin when routers down
2. Manually dialup
Hope to get site referral to the commands involved
Thanks

Hi
You can manually dial out isdn using the following commands.
isdn call interface bri 1/0(interface number) 12345678(dialer number) or
isdn test call interface bri 1/0(interface number) 12345678(dialer number)
do remember and ensure that u are in enable mode while executing the same.
for notification u can configure any freeware MRTG s/w available which can send you an email if theres any chnage in interface status.thts again will be useful for you to analyse your traffic pattern if in case you dont hv one already in place.

Hi,
There are some questions i need to clarify:
1.Is Dialer profile required for manual dialup?
2.If there is a need for a dialer profile, is ip
required
3.I understand that ppp multilink is to bind two or
more connections right?
(i)If two numbers are dialup manually, will they
still bind in this sense?
(ii)Is it necessary the "ppp multilink" command
appear on both the BRI interface as well as
interface Dialer?
Thanks in advance.

hi
hope i hve answered/cleared u r queries here.
1.Is Dialer profile required for manual dialup?
Depends on the scenario .if u r using the isdn line for dialing to a single isp then theres no need for seperate dialer profile u r bri interface config itself will do.
But if u r using between u r locations and dialing out to 2 locations then u would be requiring 2 dialer profiles for 2 locations.
2.If there is a need for a dialer profile, is ip required .
if its dialing out to ISP and if the isp has reserved/framed the ip to ur uid then u can very well mention in the profile in case if u r using dialer profile or else u need to use ip address negotiated.
If its between ur locations then you should hve the ip address assigned in the dialer interface.
3.I understand that ppp multilink is to bind two or more connections right?
(i)If two numbers are dialup manually, will they still bind in this sense?
if u r hving two different dialer strings configured ,then it will use one as a secondary dialer string number while dialing out.
if u r dialing manually to 2 different dialer strings and if both the lines are connected to a single router ideally it will work.
(ii)Is it necessary the "ppp multilink" command appear on both the BRI interface as well as interface Dialer?
its not reqd to put this command under bri inteface better configure under dialer interface.
