HSRP doubt..

Hi,

I have two routers running HSRP with 10.10.10.1 as the virtual IP. The routers have 10.10.10.2 and 10.10.10.3 as the phisical IP address of interfaces running HSRP. The client machines are configured with 10.10.10.1 as the default gateway.

When i do a trace route from the client machines to any destination outside the first hop is 10.10.10.2 which is the physical IP address of the primary router. WHy is this so..shouldn't it show 10.10.10.1 as the first hop?

I have similar topology and configuration in a different location and there the first hop is the virtual IP address of HSRP routers.I'm a bit confused.

Can any one help me with an explanation.

regards,

jimmy

The fact that one router returns the physical and one returns the HSRP virtual address is probably just an issue of IOS. What versions are you running on these routers.

The reason you might get the physical back is because of the way that traceroute works. Each router in the chain sends back an ICMP (ttl expired) to the source IP address. The routers sending the ICMP packet will source it from themselves to the source of the original packet. Cisco routers will source from the closest interface IP address regardless of HSRP.

This was probably "fixed" in a later version of IOS than the one you're using on the suspect router.

Mick.
