IOS image file format Question

We have a Hybrid OS Cisco 6509 and MFSC2 . We are upgrading the bootflash image on the MFSC2 card and I have a choice between two images:

c6msfc2-jsv-mz.121-19.E1 size: 14,224 KB

or

c6msfc2-jsv-mz.121-19.E1.bin size 14,187 KB

As you can see the only difference between the filenames is the .bin extension. Also the files are different sizes. The current bootflash image does not have a .bin extension (c6msfc2-is-mz.121-2.E)

1) What is the diference denoted by the .bin extension?

2) Can I use the .bin file to upgrade our MFSC2 ?

Hi, based on experience, I believe it really doesn't matter if there's a .bin or not. Sometimes, the IOS are renamed when copying from a TFTP server to the switch. I have a copy of the IOS version that you have (c6msfc2-jsv-mz.121-19.E1), and the file size is exactly the same (14,224 KB). I would suggest you choose this file.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! I'll let you know how it turns out.
