Is it possible to route a vlan across a backbone layer 3?

Hello,

In one site I have 2 6500 (with msfc), in the other a 3750 L3.

Both have them own vlans.

6500 -> vlan 2, 3, 4,5...

3750 -> vlan 132, 133, 134...

The routers are connected togheter with layer 3 using eigrp routing.

I need now to prolongate vlan 2 over the backbone to the other site.

Is it possible? I have found info about 802.1q tunneling but no good exemple yet.

Any Ideas?

Many thanks for your help.

Gael

Hi Gael,

The only way to extend a VLAN across 2 sites connected by a L3 network is to use something like Ethernet over MPLS (EoMPLS) or VPLS. The other alternative is to bridge the traffic across.

Hope that helps - pls rate the post if it does.

I uses L2TPv3 between 3845 routers. Not sure it is suported by 6500 and 3750. Below is what I have:

Cat6500--3845 -- WAN -- 7206VXR--Cat6500
