Pl. try to cleanup the config.. Try to use "modem autoconfigure discovery" under the line instead of "modem autoconfigure type usr_courier.

After that turn on following debug

debug confmodem

term mon

and then issue "clear line 1" and same for 2,3 and 4. That way ios will detect a modem on the line and configure it for speed etc..

After that try to dialin and moniter it. If it hangs again, issue "sh line x" where x is the line number on which modem is connected showing a probelm.Pl. post debug and show command here if problem continues.

I have had some good luck with the following modemcap when using external USR modem,

modemcap edit USR misc AT&F1S0=1&C1&D2&A1&W

line 1 4

modem autoconfigure type USR

Also ensure that we have dip switches 3&8 down, rest up.
