Say you assign a class C address on your ethernet interface and you run out of addresses (254 hosts) and you want to assign address to more hosts. YOu can add secondary addresses to incorporate more hosts. Routing between the two subnets will happen through the router.
Theoretically you can assign infinte number of secondary addresses only limited by memory on the router in practice..
