Subnet Size versus Broadcast performance hit

What is the rule of thumb for subnet size and when the broadcasts begin to affect server performance?

We have several thousand servers that have a console NIC and we traditionally have 24-bit subnets, one per VLAN. I am proposing a 22-bit submet, but am concerned about the the effect of broadcast traffic.

There are methods available to control broadcast traffic. You could use the storm-control interface configuration command to enable broadcast storm control when the specified threshold level is exceeded.
