Sudden increase in roundtrip time(cisco 2514)

Hi,

We are an educational institution having a 2Mbps leased line. On our end we use a cisco 2514.

A week back - there was a sudden increase in roundtrip times - between our router and the one with the ISP at which the leased line terminates. A normal 3.5 ms ping started taking around 300ms along with high packet loss.

A few changes on our end and at the end of the ISP (none of them significant except a few cable changes) brought down the packet loss - but not the round trip time.

We have not been able to figure out what the problem is. Does anyone know what could cause a sudden increase in roundtrip time. We have replaced the router on our end and still no help.

With an ISP in the mix, it is difficult to say. Maybe some new policy is being enforced on the packets? Maybe the ISP router has new traffic from other customers that is taxing the CPU and memory? I don't know how things work in your part of the world, but most telco carriers and ISPs in the US consider such internal architecture to be "proprietary." It is often times a battle to get details out of them.
