Suitable MIB required for querying Cat 4507R, 2950 port status

I am unsure of which MIB object to use when querying port status of the following devices, Cat 4507R and Cat 2950 both running IOS 12.1. I was given a suggestion of using ifOperStatus in the ifTable. However, this is giving me many ports' status that doesn't really tally with the actual status.

Is there a suitable MIB that can be used ?

I have not had any problem with ifOperStatus. Are you sure you have the port indexes right for the instance? It is easy to slip the port index, and this will make the port status look wrong.
