Sha,
XPIF is a Specialized port ASICs to handle most data forwarding in a distributed fashion. XPIF is the Gigabit Ethernet ASIC, and EPIF is the FastEthernet ASIC.
Specialized ASICs to provide the switch fabric or physical transport of segmented Ethernet frames between GigabitEthernet ports and from a GigabitEthernet port to the CPU port.
Provides:
Stream-based flows between ports. A stream is a linked list of packets which are headed to the same destination or group of destinations. While the
Catalyst 4k also uses XPIF/EPIF ASICs and specialized switch fabric ASICs.
Hope this is what you were looking for,

Don,
I've read this article.
===================================
Console> (enable) sh proc cpu
CPU utilization for five seconds: 21.33%
one minute: 33.96%
five minutes: 24.97%
......
145 263 242 5000 0.00% 0.00% 0.00% -2 VtpRx
193 430939 54246 10958 1.30% 1.44% 12.38% 0 Packet forwardi
194 257203 69837 6468 15.70% 15.29% 16.72% 0 Switching overh
195 31091 54063 18817 1.96% 2.02% 1.97% 0 Admin overhead
......
===================================
I first disconnected all connection and do a 'clear config all'. and the cpu utility is high still.
According to the article, the switchover traiffic are:
Address learning;
STP traffic;
control traffic;
management traffic;
Now there is not any connection and configuration. Except little control traffic, i don't think there are enough traffic would use switching overh process.
And after i remove a 4232 module(i have two 4232 modules, i'm also doubt this point, but i can find nothing on the cco about it). The cpu utility would drop.
and when plug link, there was ever a error message:
"
WLMQ_SW4006-02> (enable) l2003 Mar 24 16:04:10 %SYS-2-P2_CRIT: 1/Out of chunks of memory
"
I can't find any thing about the error message on cco(it seems cco has gone worse to non-cisco user now):(.
Thank you very much!

Sha
