Which IOS version are you running?
What terminal?
Are you able to Telnet to the switch?

What version of IOS are you running? Is it with any specific PC? Can you try with a different PC?

Thank you for the response.
I found out through another post that the problem was specific to the IOS installed on the switch. I was using a W2K device and I had connected to the serial port to the switch from boot up and through to starting SecureCRT.
The fix is to upgrade. The temporary fix is to not connect the console cable to the switch until after I have booted my computer and started SecureCRT.

Check your config register. There's a certain conf-reg value that will drop the switch to ROM-MON upon receiving a break signal (which is generated upon bringing up or shutting down the terminal application while consoled in.)
Make sure the value of your confreg is the trusty old 0x2102.
