6503 fAULTY CARD?

xargo
Level 1
Level 1

hi

We are currently trying to configure 2 6503 switches but have encountered an issue with 1 of them. Both the supervisor engines are working fine but the MSFC2 card on one of them is not being detected when the show version command is issued or when we try to access Session 15. We get the response "module 15 is not installed"

We have done a swap test with the faulty card to the other supervisor engine but again it was not detected. we have also swap tested the cards between the 2 chassis and also the memory modules.

Below are the results from the show version command on both supervisor engines. As you will see on the Text file named "faulty MSFC2 card" Module 15 is not listed as being installed.

Working MSFC2:

Issue a "switch console" from a console session and see if you can get into the MSFC's ROMMON. The following page should help you out

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/124.html

It's working.

I'm in rommon. But something is wrong: that's the set command, and the dir bootflash:

rommon 5 > set

PS1=rommon ! >

EARL_VER=6

SLOTCACHE=cards;

RET_2_RTS=13:16:11 PST Tue Dec 23 2003

BOOT=bootflash:c6msfc2-psv-mz.121-13.E12.bin,12

BOOTLDR=bootflash:c6msfc2-boot-mz.121-13.E12.bin

BSI=0

RET_2_RUTC=

?=0

rommon 6 > dir bootflash:

File size Checksum File name

14564636 bytes (0xde3d1c) 0x516ec7bf c6msfc2-jsv-mz.121-19.E1.bin

1820192 bytes (0x1bc620) 0x4c67101a c6msfc2-boot-mz.121-19.E1.bin

rommon 7 >

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+--+

And that's the same infomation, but in other switch with the same configuration, and working fine:

Router#sh bootvar

BOOT variable = bootflash:c6msfc2-psv-mz.121-19.E1.bin,12

CONFIG_FILE variable does not exist

BOOTLDR variable = bootflash:c6msfc2-boot-mz.121-19.E1.bin

Configuration register is 0x102

Router#sh bootflash:

-#- ED ----type---- --crc--- -seek-- nlen -length- -----date/time------ name

1 .. image 4C67101A 23C6A0 29 1820192 Dec 30 2003 02:56:40 c6msfc2-

boot-mz.121-19.E1.bin

2 .. image E25DA1DA EE9958 28 13292088 Dec 30 2003 02:56:56 c6msfc2-

psv-mz.121-19.E1.bin

16869032 bytes available (15112536 bytes used)

Router#

And the Flash of the "faulty" looks different than the Good one .

label on good:

SM73288XV1CIEG1DA0

17-7073-02

label on "bad":

VB8321V-CS03A

16-2149-01

The part number of MSFC card look the same:

73-7237-07A0

CNS1AA5AAA

PNG0350E

the bad one has one label more: D071344

And the serial numbers are:

Bad one: SN SAL0750QJA0

Good one:SN SAL0749QBR6

All of this tell me that the flash is wrong pn?

why the boot variables are different?

What is the different between files: jsv,dsv,isv.and who file I need to use?

To get the msfc is rommon up and running issue the "boot bootflash:c6msfc2-jsv-mz.121-19.E1.bin "

Example:

rommon> boot bootflash:c6msfc2-jsv-mz.121-19.E1.bin

The msfc is not faulty. it is just failing to find the specified boot file. See the "My msfc is missing from show module" document about this situation.

URL: http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/473/124.html

The difference between the "jsv", "dsv", "isv" images is the features available on those images.

JSV stands for the Enterprise feature set, and usually all features available in that release are found in that code.

PSV, the one you have on your working msfc, is the service provider feature set.

Details on what all the different feature sets mean is found in the Cisco.com IOS reference guide

URL:http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1828/products_white_paper09186a008018305e.shtml

All it's ok now, I change the boot variables, and the msfc boot fime.

Thanks for to help me.

Only there are one little think,

When I typed on the rommon the variables y write in lower cases

And after y typed on capital cases.

And works fine

but now if i use the set command

I have the good

BOOT=bootflash..etc.

BOOTLDR=bootflash..etc

But I have too

boot=

bootldr=

I was trying to deleted those variables in blank, but I didn't find the way.

Some way to do that?

many thanks

David Alvarez

try as much as possible not to change any rommon variables unless under the direction of TAC.

The "boot=" and "bootldr=" have no affect on the switch. Don't worry about it.

There is no customer supported command to delete the rommon variables.

Ok .

Many thanks, all works fine
