just seems to always boot back to the original file and not the one i just tftp'd up. could it be that this router requires additional ram to support this ios?
file that i tftp'd to flash was
c181x-adventerprisek9-mz.151-4.M3.bin

Delete the old bin file and then reboot the router. It should then boot the new bin file.

Butchie - if I'm telling it to boot to the new file and its not. Doesn't it suggest that there is a problem with the new bin file? My fear is that if I delete the old bin file out it won't boot at all. I don't have access to any other bin files for the time being so i dont want to kill it completely.

Johnathan,
When you say your are "telling" your router to boot to the new file and it is not, when it does boot do you see any errors listed during the boot-up sequence?
Based on your comments can I assume you have a command in your configuration file that looks something like the following:
boot system flash:c181x-adventerprisek9-mz.151-4.M3.bin or at least something along these lines?
If you have two bin files in your flash, the router will boot to the first one it sees listed consistantly. if the new bin file is the last in line, it will never be called to load.
If you are concerned about not having a working bin file to fall back onto, then save your working bin file to a tftp location. As a minimum if the router has issues with your new bin file, it will boot to rommon and you can get the working bin file back into the router from there. If you had memory limitations, you would have received an error of some sort during the tftp'ing of the new bin file that there was not enough room. Have you done an MD5 check to see if the bin file did infact transfer sucessfully?

the usb/serial cable that i was using was causing my laptop to blue screen so i was telneting in and wasn't able to see any error on boot up. In any case...
boot: unsupported boot device "c181x-adventerprisek9-mz.151-4.M3.bin"
to answer your question yes i do have something in my command that looks like boot system flash....
it's clearly trying to boot from the file that i sent up and not the original without having to be deleeted. A

Then I believe your next step would be to compare the MD5 hash, and, more than likely, download that bin file again.
