Catalyst 3550 only supports 15 HSRP groups instead of 16

I currently have 15 HSRP groups setup and running on a 3550. Trying to add another HSRP group and I am getting this error message:

%This platform supports at most 16 HSRP groups

If it only supports 16 groups, then I should be allowed to add another group to make it sixteen total? Currently I have 15 groups and can't add another group.

I am running version 12.1(22)EA1a (c3550-i5q3l2-mz.121-22.EA1a.bin).

The HSRP groups start from 0-15 with 0 being default HSRP group. Can you post the output of "sh standby brief"

I don't have a group 0.

Did you configure HSRP on more VLAN interfaces and then remove it? It appears you might be running into the following bug

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/bugtool/onebug.pl?bugid=CSCee29773

Paste the output of "sh platform ip unicast standby" and then reload the switch and see if it makes any difference. From the bug note, it appears the fix went into the code you are running but you are still seeing similar issue. If reload fixes it, open a TAC SR along with sh tech, sh log, sh standby brief and sh platform ip unicast standby attached to it so that the TAC engineer can contact development engineer.

Well... This is a new VLAN interface, so there was never a HSRP group on it before. Do you still think I should reload it?

Yes.. but capture the command outputs i mentioned before you reload.

My guess is that HSRP group 0 is always there, whether you want it or not, and it counts towards the 16. Try putting the new VLAN into the default HSRP group.

Just tried with group 0 and that didn't work either. :(

As long as you are not bridging between VLANs you can use the same HSRP group number on each vlan, i.e.

interface VLAN10

standby 1 ip 10.1.1.1

!

interface VLAN20

standby 1 ip 20.1.1.1

!

interface VLAN30

standby 1 ip 30.1.1.1

Humm... Now I am getting this error message. :(

%Max number of HSRP MAC addresses exceeded

As I mentioned in my previous post, I am thinking it is related to

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/bugtool/onebug.pl?bugid=CSCee29773

As I said in my previous email the HSRP group numbers do not need to be unique for each VLAN as long as you are not bridging between VLANs.

This is the same on the 6500 platform.

Andy

Andrew.. We understand that.

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/hsrp_cat3550_limit_44143.html

But the problem here is, the switch is complaining about exceeding HSRP group limit with only 15 groups configured(16 is the max). This is not expected behavior.

When I re-used an already existing HSRP group number on a different VLAN interface, then it gave me the mac address error.
