Changing interface speed on 3640

I have a 3640 router that I want to change the port speed on. It currently is running at 10000. I'd like to have it run at 100000. When I tried to change it last week using the "bandwidth" command, the tech at the other end wasn't getting traffic. Only after I changed it back to 10000 did he start seeing traffic again. Am I using the wrong command?

Thanks

BW command doesnt change the physical speed of the interface. It just specifies a bandwidth parameter which is used by routing protocols such as OSPF, EIGRP , which has bandwidth as a parameter in their cost calculation. If you need to have a 100 mbps port, you need to buy one, you cannot configure a 10 mbps port to run at 100 mbps.

If you have a card which is 100 mbps, you can still run it at 10 by using the command "speed 10". So if your card is indeed a 100 M card, then you can change it back to 100 mbps, by using the command "speed 100".
