I have a Cisco 837 Router. The problem I am facing is that its cookie information is corrupted.

Hi Mujeeb,

Was there a heavy rain or lighting at your location?

The router will be in ROMMON status, so don't try to use the TFTPDNLD command or XMODEM to load the IOS because it's still in the Flash.

Here's the steps to follow to repair the router:

1- in the rommon mode digit the command PRIV that allows to you to enter in the privileged mode, use the password 0000 (four zeros) and enter.

2- if you cookies are corrupt you'll see this situation:

3- now type the command COOKIE so you can set the values manually.When you insert them you just need to insert the values after the :

As i told you the important values are number after the : as you can see let's see the first two rows of the previous example :

Hi Mujeeb,

Try PRIV as it is a hidden command and if you get some error can you paste that error.

Also once you are in priv mode you need to enter COOKIE and hit enter and just insert the values

Hello Ankur,

I have changed cookie values but still Router is not booting properly, possibly b/c of wrong cookie values. Now i want to change the values again but problem is that I am not able to get into PRIV mode , Router accepts passwords but not get into required mode.

I saw this same response posted elsewhere on the Internet, but still dont understand what the following line means:

How do I get the value to go in here?

I have about 20 x 827 routers which all have the same problem and if we can get this fixed it would be fantastic, but unfortunatley there is not much on how to recover from this situation on the web, and Cisco dont have any helpful documentation either.

I can give directions on how to figure it out obviously, but I can try and help you guys get your routers up and going. I will look for an 837 to see if I can find the correct cookie values.

Hi,

I have a number of 827's all with the same problem (probably about 15 or 20 of them).

I can get into priv mode, and enter the cookie stuff no worries. What I cant figure out is how to turn the block of values from a working cookie (as above), into answers for the priv mode cookie questions.

I tried just entering the pairs of digits in sequence, but when I looked at the cookie afterwards, it was different some values in the wrong place, and the router is still not working.

If you could PLEASE break down the 'cookie' output into the answers that we should provide during the 'priv cookie' command, then I should be able to use the values I have to get these routers up and running again.

Also, how can I determine what MAC address to enter.. there is no sticker on these machines (inside or out) to get that figure.. or does it not matter for this to work?

Hi all,

I had exactly the same issue on a 826. I have resolved it successfully, and now I am working on a web page that will describe everything I found out. This will explain most of the contents of the cookie and also how to find out the "priv" password. It should be helpful for you guys, but it will take two or three days to finish. I'll post the link here.

In the meantime you may want to pass the time unscrewing your routers and writing down the processor board ID. It is printed on a label on the mainboard and should look like JAB01A1B2 (most of them start with JA or FO). This ID will be encoded into the cookie.

Also you should try to find out the MAC address of the box. This could be a bit more difficult since there is no label anywhere. Try your network management system if available, or some other software that may have the MAC address in some database, cache or similar. I have used a NAI RougeSystemSensor which had the MAC address in it's database.

It's not too serious if you are unable to find it out, since the router will work with virtually any valid AMC address, so you can also make a good guess. I will post some information about what makes a guess a good guess on my web page.
