I have two 6509s set up in the lab running IOS native mode, I have created three of the same VLAN interfaces, and VLANs for each of the router. Both 6509 are setup for VTP server mode, they both are set up with same VTP domain name. I have created the same VLAN on both of the routers. I have set HSRP between the two routers. The first 6509 is the active router for first two vlan1, 52, and the second router is active for vlan 50. The first 6509 is the root switch for vlan 1, 52, and backup root for vlan 50. The second 6509 is the root switch for vlan 50 and backup root for vlan1, 52.
Both 6509 are trunked to a 3550 switch, I have two host connected to the 3550 switch, one on vlan 52 and the other on vlan 50. When both 6509 are connected I get a lot of ping drop when ping a host from vlan 50 to vlan 52, but if I disconnect either of the 6509s, all pings are successful.
Yes, both 6509 exchange vlan information since they are both in the same vtp domain. I have set up both 6509 in vtp server mode, incase one failes, the other would still be able modifiy vlans? Does cisco recommand setting up the second 6509 in vtp transport mode?
Both 6509 are trunk over fiber link, also the first 6509 is trunk to 3550 g1/1 and the second 6509 is trunk to g1/2.
I believe the problem is with Asymetric routing; I was reading an article about this issue, they suggested some soluation to this probelm, but it does not seem to me to be the most efficient way to resolve this issue with HSRP!! here is th link that i got this infromation from..
