How to enable RSTP

Hi

Can someone please explain how to enable RSTP in the switch (Let's say in 2950 switch).

Or do you have RSTP running in now-a-days switches?

Thanks in advance!

Chris.

Hi Chris,

The command to enable it is "spanning-tree mode rapid-pvst

This and other config requirements for RSTP are documented here:

Cisco switches by default run PVST+ (Per VLAN Spanning Tree+) which is compatible with 802.1d STP.  Most newer switches support PVST+, Rapid-PVST+ & MST.  With IOS-based switches you can check what version you are running with the command 'show spanning-tree summary':

switch#show spanning-tree summary
Switch is in rapid-pvst mode

<<<< Output Omitted >>>

switch#

To change the STP mode use the global configuration command 'spanning-tree mode XXX':

switch(config)#spanning-tree mode ?
  mst         Multiple spanning tree mode
  pvst        Per-Vlan spanning tree mode
rapid-pvst  Per-Vlan rapid spanning tree mode

Switch(config)#spanning-tree mode rapid-pvst

The other posters have shown how to enable rapid-STP, but on a 2950, depending on the "age" of the IOS, it might not offer rapid-STP as a feature.
