L2TPv3 or EoMPLSoGRE

Hi all,

I want to connect 2 sites on layer 2 through the internet (layer3). What to use, L2TPv3 or EoMPLSoGRE?

What type of equipment i need to implement the 2 solutions?

also cisco OTV supported on cisco nexus 7000 switches and ASR 1000 routers can provide a solution for a L2 DCI over a L3 network However, for a data center interconnection DCI i don't recommend you to use it over internet especially if you need layer 2 expansion between the two DCs as internet can not grantee quality and high speed forwarding like dark fiber for example which might lead to high latency that eliminate some of the benefits of having a layer 2 expansion

Adding to Marwanshawi

are you really looking to connect your two data centers. if yes you can go with the above suggested solution but if you are only looking for to connect two diffrent offices by extending the lan than use L2TPv3 as EoMPLS is not ppossible over the internet cloud as internet is pure IP cloud.

You can refer the below config for lan extension...

They work over pure ip, but the problem is it is not a good and recommended solution to have a DCI with LAN expansion over the Internet
I would say you need to select a better DCI transport such as dark fiber or private wan then select the technology for layer 2 expansion

Hi all,

Firstly thank you Marwan and Shivlu for your reponse.

For the moment we need to connect only one client, so i think L2TPv3 is enough for that. But i can implement that only

with ISR , 6500 and 7200 series?

hi Christos

All the ISR and 7200 does support l2tpv3 but I think CAT6k does only EoMPLS (encapsualtion MPLS not L2TPv3).

I also founded from cisco.com/go/fn that many equipements support L2TPv3 (but i will testing before).
