Cisco Catalyst 2924-XL switch, STP supports 64 vlans. What happens when another vlan, say 65, is assigned? Does the 65th vlan operate with out STP? What are some of the issues I need to plan for? Thanks in advance - I don't have a switch to test this on so I am asking the experts!!

2924xl supports only 64 vlans and STP instances according to the following URL

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c2900xl/29_35wc3/rn/ol205003.htm#xtocid16

On devices which can support 256 vlan (35xx xL and some 29xxXLs), it would not run STP for those extra vlans.

2924XL is designed to be access layer switch with only 24 ports and you won't able to configure more than 64.

here is the message you would get

H-2900XL-7A(vlan)#exit

Proposed configuration has too many VLANs for this device's core memory

resources. Either reduce the number of VLANs proposed or use another VTP

device to configure database. (The latter will cause this device to enter

TRANSPARENT mode automatically if propagated to it.)

APPLY failed.

Exiting....
